I would suggest renting a small class B or C for a week and traveling locally just to find out how the whole thing works. Try a State Park and some commercial RV parks.
For finding out where to stay, purchase a Woodall's travel guide - they provide info on State and National Parks and almost all of the commercial RV parks for each state. Listings are arranged by the nearest town and include instructions on finding the park, the facilities available, and recent camping fees.
Campervans (class B's) sound like the best fit for your needs if they are in your price range. Since you are by yourself, you would probably be furthest ahead with a custom setup. Check out the Sportsmobile website (www.sportsmobile.com) for their offerings and information.
