Welcome to the forum and RVing! Since you're a "Beast of Burden" at 6'4" and 225 lb. and want to travel the country, I really don't think you'd be happy with a pop-up or van. You need to start going to dealers and get into them to test everything out - the head room, bed, shower and leg room sitting at the toilet. I think a smaller travel trailer would be ideal.
Also, keep in mind that if you'd like to visit the national parks or stay in national forests, many do not have showers so that might be a 'must have' for you. Too, a pop-up can be tiresome putting up and down in rain or wind, especially if you want to move around and see the country.
We've had all of them from a tent, pop-up, tiny trailer with no bathroom, 27' travel trailer, 33' 5th wheel and now, since we've been full-timing for 16 years, a 40' motorhome (but there are two of us). We've also rented a Class C twice (one time for Alaska after the ferry trip). We really enjoyed the 27' trailer and 33' 5th wheel for all the conveniences of a full bathroom. The Class C was nice, too.
I would just advise to start visiting all kinds of dealers. Best of luck to you. I really think you'd enjoy it.
Also, check out some single RVing groups (Google). We've met folks who really enjoy traveling with them or meeting up with them across the country. There are a couple especially for retirees of a certain age and they are not dating groups. :) They just organize activities together and camp out together. It would be a great way for you to meet others like you.
Here's one great group:
Escapee SOLOS
It would require you to join the Escapee RV Club which is a great idea anyway. It's around $50/year. Staying in one of their Rainbow or Co-Op parks would really give you a good feeling about RVing. You'd be surrounded by any help you would need. They're a wonder group of people. The parks are especially nice at the holidays because they have nice meals and entertainment. The Club membership also includes a wonderful magazine with minimal advertising and articles written by RVers themselves.
