Then it's a matter of calling them for reservations. Going to big tourist areas during tourist season can make it difficult to find last minutes spaces, but other than that finding spaces isn't all that hard.
In rural areas in the middle part of the country, and in the South, I've found campgrounds or RV parks much easier to find than motels I would want to stay in. This is traveling on U.S. trunk highways, and state highways, rather than the Interstates. It seems today, to find a motel, you have to go to the Interstate system and stay in one of the franchise outlets, because most of the small town mom & pop motels have closed, except for the few with hourly rates and pink and purple interior lighting.
