Inverter install

Hello,

So we are dry camping for the first time and I am going to install an inverter for small electronic gadgets. I have my house cables going to a disconnect switch and a block stud. From the switch and stud the cables then go to my battery bank. My question is, could I simply run the cables from the inverter to the disconnect switch, stud? I would prefer this method? Or would I have to run the inverter directly to the battery bank? The inverter is a 600w pure sine, would I need some sort of fuse? Thanks all in advance and my apologies if question is repetitive. Additionally, would I need two in-line fuses or just one? I have a pair of 6V batteries?

  • my inverter is mounted above the battery box. I used 1 gauge cable with a run of about 10 inches. Both cables run through rubber grommets coming out of box. I felt a fuse was not necessary.
  • I'd prefer connecting direct to the battery bank with a fuse at the positive terminal. The inverter should be kept as close to the battery bank as possible without it being in the same compartment.
  • If the inverter is right there and the wire is short and in plain view with sufficient ampacity I would skip the fuse. If the wire is longer than a couple feet or twists into blind areas or through a panel then I would have a single fuse on the positive side close to the source(switch stud).
  • The closer your inverter is to the battery bank, the shorter and the heavier gauge those cables are, the better. Here's a cable gauge guide that may help ... and yes, you should properly fuse the + cable feed from the battery to the inverter.
