Is this noraml for a battery?

I charge house battery up to around 12.75 Has a battery disconnect switch (installed on neg side) in about two weeks later, I test with same volt meter and reading is 12.18 volts.

Is this normal or is something sucking juice out of it very slowly?

Thanks

  • Op here.....Thanks for replies. Elec is my worst subject. I test with volt meter long after charging.

What would be the next test I should do? My cheap battery load tester, stays in the green when testing the next day.

Battery is 2 years old. It has been ran down some but not completely drained. Like maybe around 12.0

Is it possible or likely because my battery disconnect is on neg side that something is draining battery. Maybe put disconnect on positive side?

    Thanks again
  • No, it shouldn't be that low after 2 weeks IF it is shut off and has no drains. If the battery hasn't received regular 100% charges it may be sulfated. Charge it and check the specific gravity.

Are you testing the voltage right after taking the battery off the charger? If so, there is going to be a difference. To get a true measurement of voltage, you should test a bettery at least 4 hours AFTER taking it off the charger. That will tell you the true voltage. A place for great information is 12volt side of life. Google it.

Yep, its called a surface charge. you need to wait a bit to get the proper voltage after a charge. it sounds like your battery is OK.

  • A good battery fully charged and disconnected should hold 12.65 volts for several weeks at least.

Best to charge at 14.4 to 14.8 volts until the amps drop to 1/2 percent of capacity.
So a typical 100 amp/hour battery charging at 14.4 volts gets down to 1/2 amp charging it is full.
Verify with a hydrometer the next day.
  • The minimum charge should be 13.2 volts but you could charge it all the way to 14.4 volts. It is normal for a battery to lose voltage but should hold a charge for more than two weeks.
