It’s Summertime! North to Alaska?

For the first time in my life I have got some free time and no responsibilities. I have always wanted to do something adventurous and I am strongly considering buying a travel trailer and heading to Alaska to fish for the summer. I have spent plenty of time in AK but have always flown there. I’m a 49 year old, single gal. Has anyone ever made the trek from Northern California to Alaska alone? Is it safe? Do RVers ever caravan? Any insights would be helpful!

  • Do it. If you have a problem, people up there tend to offer help. You will meet some of the same people in campgrounds over and over. At least we did as many travel about the same distance each day and do similar sightseeing.
We have made the trip several times. Just drive carefully, obey the speed limits and observe the markers for frost heaves.
  • BC is definitely a safe place to travel through. Observe the usual precautions like anywhere else. In our travels through CA, OR & WA, we've met many single females towing really small TTs up to huge motorhomes and they're from all over the place and doing thousands of miles of travelling. One lady in her 80s from New York was driving a humongous MH be herself - very impressive!

Note that gas prices are high now in BC (nearly $5/gal) and will go higher in the summer. I would look into maybe going through Alberta where gas is cheaper. FWIW, their sales tax is 5% compared to 12-15% elsewhere in Canada.

Just watch what you take across the Can/US border. You may want to go to the US & Canadian border agency websites to see what the restrictions are.
