Learning to BackIn!!

This is the beginning of our 3rd year with our camper. Never towed a trailer til this camper. Have been learning each year. This past weekend went to a state park by myself, DW is away in Africa. I picked the site from the website map, couldn't tell what kind of site it was, and if there were any obstructions. Turned out I had trees on both sides, and a small rock wall on one side. Though it did have a nicer turning angle. I was amazed at being able to do this with relative ease on my first time out this year. Was able to take it slow and easy as I arrived on Thursday early afternoon, few people around.

For those beginning It does get better and you will get more confident! Now my challenge is to not get too overconfident and forget to take it slow and easy. Getting it out I had to back up a couple of times to clear the rock wall on the opposite side.

  • Wow, that is one tight spot to get into!

    You did good.

I find I have no trouble backing into ones like that where I can see all the way using my drivers side mirror, but even at that, I would have been kissing those trees.

It's backing into the blind side, (ones that curve the opposite direction) that I hate

  • And don't forget to look UP..and if all else fails, remember your GOAL...Get Out And Look.....Dennis
  • One that always got me , backup with the mirrors OR by looking over your shoulders !
    You can't do both ;)
  • Takes a bit but patience but it comes along. I get a bit edgy if I have another waiting to get by me or more then one waiting. Even I that now I just stay calm and do my thing and they can wait. We've all been there before so hopefully they remember that. Its ur hard earned dollars if you hit something so I just take it easy as best I can.
  • Another trick that helped me when I as a teen from my dad.
The rear side of front tire points exactly where the rear end of the trailer will go.
  • A simple trick I was told early on was to steer with my hand at the bottom of the steering wheel. With your hand in this position your steer to the direction you want the trailer to go.
  • I agree practice does make perfect. Remember to do it at your pace and don't let someone rush you, it's your property that will get hurt.
