Long Hot Showers in an RV?

We have been retired for a couple of years now. At first, we thought about relocating to an area where we could try boating. We are now thinking that we don't want to commit and be stuck in one area -especially Florida in the summer.

We really like to travel but hate hotel rooms. The only great thing about a hotel room is being able to take long hot showers.

So now we're thinking maybe we can get a used class A for @ 50K and see the national parks out west. (I know, sounds like "Lost in America" but)

We want the ability to roam around the western states. We also want an RV that will allow us the ability to boondock and avoid the crowded RV parks.

What would be a good class A motorhome option for us ?
  • Our entry level diesel pusher coach came with a 10 gal water heater and I never have a problem of using all of the hot water and never turn the water off during my shower. I guess, as others said, it all depends upon what you consider "long". My showers are usually about 5 - 7 minutes.

The generator will provide 50amp power to the coach so that you can use any of the electrical appliances the coach may have. In addition, it also supplies power to the converter to keep your batteries charged so that you have all 12vdc electrical items available.

Also, as mentioned, some coaches come with a water heating device (usually runs by diesel) that will provide endless hot water as long as the water supply is available.

    Hope this helps

  • with limited water and heating capabilities in a RV you might just think about finding some natural hot springs to soak in.
  • Rvers usually get wet, turn off the spray(the shower head has a on/off button), soap up and then turn the spray back on to rinse. If you do this you can get a long hot shower out of a 6 gallon waterheater.

Some Class A's come with or can be modified to add on demand hot water tanks so you would have an unlimited supply of hot water.

Also most RV Resort showers are very nice and clean. I often will shower there and have an unlimited hot water supply.

I figured "long hot showers" and RV's are not synonymous, but what do all you full timers do when you want some of those creature comforts ?

Also, if we want to pull off the road and boondock for a couple of days, does the generator supply everything ?
I don't know how long "long" is, but I can usually take a good 3-4 minute shower sans running out of Hw. On gas that water is pretty hot so it lasts a long time. I don't do the "navy" thing.. yuck.

My comfort is a bath, and I could go to a hotel for that, but I've never done it. I just learn to live with the shower. Yes.

  • Actually, as long as you meet one criteria, you can take as long a hot shower as you want. You need full hookups. Hook up the sewer and leave the gray tank valve open so the water won't fill up the gray tank. (Do not leave the black tank valve open.) Hook up to shore water so you don't run out of water in the fresh water tank. Turn on both the electric and propane heating elements on the water heater.

You will have unlimited water, unlimited drainage, and since the two heating elements will keep up with the water usage, unlimited hot water.

    But that does prevent boondocking.
  • Get something with an Aqua-Hot. It's a diesel fueled water heater that gives unlimited hot water. But your biggest problem won't be heating the water, it will be getting the water to heat if you're boondocking.

I recommend a very well used Prevost. In your price range, you can get a professional conversion with the 8V92 engine. I don't think you can get the Detroit series 60 unless you add a few more bucks. ;)

Although it is an electric coach, we can run ours for about 2 days before we have to run the generator to recharge the batteries. Fresh/gray/black tanks have excellent capacity too.

Edited to add: just saw the screen name of the OP and remembered he is going to finance his RV. This option is not readily available for those who do not have cash.

Unless you do some mods the standard 6-gallon hot water heater in the RV UNITS will not allow for long hot showers haha... 6-gallons is not alot of hot water as compared to a standard house size 40-50 gallon hot water heater..

Also any standard RV unit will have to have added battery banks and inverters systems etc to be able to operate for extended times camping off the power grids. Adding more batteries and battery systems including solar panels is all doable and by no means a show stopper.

Having TOO LARGE of RV Unit does has it downside of being able to get back to some of the get away places you might want to be at.

Will take some planning before you just jump in there and buy something. Consider what you think you will be wanting to do when camping...
