Looking for RV Park near St Petersburge FL.

Hi me and my wife are taking are first trip full time. I retire in Jan 2014 and will be traveling from Colorado down to Florida Along I 10. My youngest daughter lives in St Petersburg FL and we would like to stay around 60 miles from there. We are looking for an affordable RV park near there that is dog friendly. any suggestions will be appriciated. Also any suggestions for overnight parks along I 10 from New Mexico to Florida. Thanks Doug
  • There is easily 100 or more within 60 miles of St Pete. Suggest you go on line to Woodalls, Good Sam, AAA, or any of the other sources.

Keep in mind that starting January thru April it is prime time in Florida and reservations will probably be needed well in advance. Many places will have limits on length of stay also.
  • Bay Bayou in Tampa is a nice park.
Quail Run in Wesley Chapel is our favorite.
Dunedin RV Resort (Carefree Resort) in Dunedin is about 23 miles from St Pete but you have to travel on US19 with lots of traffic lights and traffic.
No park in the area is cheap in the winter. Most are fairly reasonable if monthly rates in the off season.
  • Some suggestions on shortest route and places to stop:
I would take I-40 east at Albuquerque.
    KOA Tucumcari, NM
Amarillo, TX - Oasis RV Resort.
Then take US287 south to Wichita Falls.
Note: to go around Dallas, at Decatur TX, take US380 east to Greenville TX, then south on US69. You can either hop on I-20 east or take US69 south all the way to Beaumont TX.
In Longview TX, off I-20 we like Fernbrook RV resort.
I would take I-20 to Shreveport, then take I-49 south to I-10.
There is a KOA at Lafayette Louisiana exit Five miles west of Lafayette. At the Scott/Cankton Exit, #97 on I-10, SW corner of Exit.
We usually stop at Tallahassee RV Park in Tallahassee FL. or if you make it further to I-12, we like Lakeside RV resort in Livingston Louisiana Exit 22) go south on Hwy 63 approximately 1.2 miles on the left.
Then I would take exit 225 (US19 south). Then turn left on US98 south.
right onto SR589 toll (Suncoast Parkway). Toll is reasonable and lot less traffic. Stay on the parkway until the I-275 south exit toward St Petersburg.
hope this helps. Enjoy the trip!
  • This past spring we stayed at the St. Pete KOA. Very nice place with hospitable managers. It sits along a fresh water bayou and about 3mi from the beaches. the park can handle big rigs as well as small. Plenty of 50 amp spaces as well as WiFi.
  • Madeira Beach KOA, Myakka River State Park - look at the new paved section with full hook ups.
  • Another thing you might want to look into is rvparkreviews.com. They have a search feature where you can put in St. Petersburg, FL, all the amenities you are looking for and how long a radius you want to put around St. Petersburg for the search and hit the search button - it'll list all the parks on the site within that radius that meet all the amenities you're looking for. Pet Friendly is one of the choices you can put in. You can look at all the reviews from there.

I found quite a few really good parks that way.
  • I know this is pushing close to the 50 miles part a bit (But so is Myakka) BUT... Sun N Fun in Sarasota is HUGE, pretty nice and I haven't been to one more pet friendly yet. It's about 44 miles south but it is a pretty easy drive up I75 then over the sunshine skyway.

The Dunedin Resort is pretty nice and that whole area is beautiful over there with the Dunedin Causeway / Caladesi island and Clearwater beach close by. Downtown Dunedin is nice to hang out at too.
