Lower Kern River

Hello and thanks to all!

We are looking to play out on the river this summer and was wondering if anyone could reccomend a decent camground, we are open to boondoking. Ideally a calm spot near the river where we can float along with our toddler. Is this area busy in the summer months? Any info regarding the area will be GREATLY appreciated! Thanks!

  • I agree about the Kern River especially the last two years. Last Memorial Day weekend there were 30 rescues and 3 fatalities. For little kids head to Lake Isabella.
  • If you mean the Lower Kern before it empties into Lake Isabella, there is a KOA on 178, near Weldon. There is a nature preserve close by. I don't know about kayak launching there. Farther east on 178 is BLM-managed Chimney Peak Recreation Area. Plenty of campgrounds around Isabella. And yes, the area gets busy in summer. Also hot.

  • OK. I’ll be more specific. Keep your toddler out of...not even near...the Killer Kern.
  • The lower Kern River is known for rafting not floating.
