Considering the OP's finances, and what sounds like desire to move around a lot at first, I would start with what he knows and likes (MH), for seeing the country for a bit, then continue or switch to a 5ver.
Having your kitchen with you on the road or clothes after that hike or swim comes in handy, pluses for a MH while changing locations frequently. Not so much when you are staying in one place for weeks.
Were I to go that route, I'd start with a small C, say 24' so you don't have need a toad.
