Speedogomer has it right. I grew up the same way moving farm equipment quite young. When I hear about the techniques some people use to back trailers it just confuses me. Things like having their hand on the bottom of the wheel and which way to turn. Get to a place that is open and set up some cones and practice. Do it again and again, change the cones to a different situation and practice some more. Once you get used to it and the more you do it, it will become second nature and you will be more confident.
Too often I see people at the campgrounds and boat landings screaming and swearing back and forth at one another (driver and spotter). That kind of stress doesn't make it easier. Be patient, get out and look if you are unsure.
Most TT are wider than the tow vehicle. When towing you have much less leeway to sway within your lane. Just because your tow vehicle is between the lines doesn't mean that your trailer isn't over the center line.
