Nervous about pulling my TT

I just purchased a 28' TT. Wife and I are beyond excited. It is lightweight and fits our needs.

I had it checked out and it's ready to go with new tires. Hitch with weight distribution and sway, good brake controller all installed and ready. Dealer said they will hook up trailer to my hitch and show me how everything works.

I'll admit, I'm nervous about pulling it the first time. Will face some traffic in Ft Worth, then about 45 miles of highway travel to get it home. Any comments or advice is most welcome. I feel once I get it home I can practice, but that first time has me a bit anxious. I have little experience with towing, so I'm taking suggestions.
  • Drive safely and defensively. Use your mirrors to be aware of what is around you at all times. Dont worry about what others may think of you being in their way -- it's your road, too. If you begin to get stressed, find somewhere safe to pull over and take a breather.

  • Its going to make a lot of creaking noises - this is OK. Put some grease on the ball. Remove the sway bar before backing. Do some starts and stops in a parking lot to dial in your brake controller. You will be a pro in no time. Good luck and have fun!
  • We are from Fort Worth and understand the worry. Pick the trailer up during the day for the least amount of traffic. Video tape your instructions - it would have saved us an awning arm or 2 if we had. Your side mirrors tilt them up if they do for the best view point. Thankfully people are friendly and will give you room. Leave plenty of room for stopping. Camping is so much fun - worth all the learning, time, and money you will be spending. Enjoy!
  • OK first you should be a little nervous about your first time towing an unfamiliar TT.
Second It already sounds like you have everything setup for your TT so listen and observe when your dealer is showing you how things work and when towing your TT just remember that you now have extra weight as well so allow extra time when gettining up to speed and stopping.

    Good Luck
