if i may change gears a little....has anyone ever used an "RV" GPS like from Garmin?...if so what r your thoughts......secondly.....whats "good sam" all about? worth it?
I have a Garmin RV760LMT. I bought it for my Class B motorhome and I love it. You can enter multiple profiles into it and then run it in RV or automobile mode. It show places that service RV's, propane sales and so on. The LMT means it has lifetime map upgrades.
Some tips on backing a trailer. When you back up, put your hand on the BOTTOM of the steering wheel. When you want the trailer to go left, move your hand left.
Get a couple of cheap FS radios so your spotter can talk to you clearly.
If it is way out of position, don't be embarrassed to pull up straight and try again.
Some campgrounds have "pull through" sites. These usually cost a little more ($5-25) and are aimed at long Class A's with a trailer or towed vehicle.
I've been known to "cheat" a little bit and mount trailer balls on the front of my vehicles. You might not be able to do this for a 30 foot trailer, but a small one, especially if you have back trouble like me, you can zip it right in.
Since this is your first unit, pick up a copy of "the Complete Idiots Guide to RVing". I knew MOST of what was in it but there were enough fresh tips that it was worth the price. My boss bought a trailer and I loaned it to him and there again, it told him things he didn't know enough to ask.
As for Good Sam, I've been meaning to join and have gotten a lot of good advice from them. The campgrounds I've used I went by the Good Sam ratings.
Since you're a mechanic, just remember to treat it like your WIFE'S car, not yours. I ran a shop years ago and know I can get my truck going if there's a problem but HER car is kept in top shape. Wheel and bearing maintenance is something you really want to pay attention to.
