(My second posting) We learned a good lesson many years ago about elec motors with plastic covers; always exposed to the elements.
We were boondocking middle of nowhere, no cell service and probably 15 miles off beaten path. When we got ready to leave our elec Trailer tongue jack didn't work. I couldn't find the manual over ride handle anywhere, so that I could manually crank jack. I ran the pick up for about 45 min hoping to charge or atleast get some elec to jack and of course I checked the fuse. Still didn't work. With my bottle jack I was able to get the trailer raised a bit and hitch on trailer ball and then removed the jack and drove home. Imagine if this failure was on an awning motor on a class A or C. As high as the elec awning motors are, how could I even reach it? If I had to take off awning, it wouldn't fit into door of MH. Tie it on top? Fold it up to the side of RV somehow? Certainly I couldn't drive about 12 miles on a narrow logging road with awning sticking out. No way I could get close enough to cell service to call mobile mechanic or drive to store and buy ladder tall enough to work on it. I really don't want to carry a ladder, one I have back end is enough.
My lessons learned...Make sure I carry and know where the manual crank handle is for tongue jack. (Would you believe I paid about $35.00 for a replacement)? And we have practiced several times cranking in the slide out manually. But still a big mystery to me is folding in an awning if I have too, in the middle of nowhere.
All those problems avoided with manual awning IMO.
