My first thought is that by the time you get to California you will not be uneasy about towing. Second, I don't think there is an alternative to driving Hwy 1 to get to the State Park. If once you get into the state, and if you still feel nervous, then I would recommend that you come in from the north. But we have taken that route in both directions, and we have enjoyed it all.
