Hi,
We're new, too, and were looking for a slide-in for my 3/4-ton F250, for precisely the same reasons you stated. Namely, my job at the time (twelve hour shifts, two and three day stretches) was about 80 miles from home, and was costing me $125-150 per week in gas alone. We found a 1966 AVION that we bought for $300, and went to work outfitting it so that I could "camp out" in the parking lot at the job. Long story short (too late, I know), job ended mid-May, so now we're preparing for "semi-retired" camping. The slide-in is perfect for two, we believe, forcing us to live light and precluding travel-guests.
Anyway, my initial point was to say that you might consider a slide-in rig, then haul your run-around vehicle (or trailer) with you. My ultimate goal is a 6x8 or so enclosed trailer to house a golfcart or gator and a small shop.
Hope this helps.
