I thought of going the used route for my first TT, but I determined that since I didn't know squat about what to avaoid or how to check out a used unit, the better bet was to go with something new. You may get lucky and find a brand new last years model on the lot. Ask if there are any.
I think your limitation in a TT is going to be your tow vechile's payload. Just remember that everything subtracts from payload - even a full tank of gas. Two boys means lots of cargo - double what I bring for one! However, you might be ok going with something like a Lance 2185 which has bunk beds and plenty of room for a family of 4 + dog. Whatever you decide concerning a TT, make sure you do the numbers and make sure it is safe and all maintenance is up to date. Consider overhauling the brakes and check the tires. Any other issues you may face are just part of the learning experience.
I think I read on here that some national parks don't allows pets - something to verify. Buy the movie mentioned and save it for a rainy day while camping. Good luck and keep everyone posted!
