Many years ago, when I used to ride trains, there was a sign in the lavatory that said "DO NOT FLUSH TOILET WITHIN ONE MILE OF STATION!"
I wondered about that until the first time I used the toilet. When I flushed it, I could look right through the valve and see the ground rushing past. It just dumped on the tracks!
Of course, now they have holding tanks. I think...
