Since they're the first responder, there can't be any question or doubt as to what they're responding to. By using the QUOTE function, it just clutters up the posting by taking up unnecessary space with the quote.
There, now I can go take a nap - it's been a rough morning.....

Not too surprising, since over half the responders thus far could not discern that you were only asking about the FIRST responder. :S
But if the first responder (and all subsequent responders) had quoted the OP, then that one-half of all responders would have been able to re-read the OP's comment for yet another time and maybe it would then become apparent to them that the OP was referring only to the first responder.
