I can't help you along your route, but in the great expanse of nothing part of the country it is somewhat common for small towns to have municipal RV campgrounds often with water and electric hookup for under $20, some places even offer the first night free. Another often cheap alternative are COE campgrounds, again many have water and electric priced in the $20 per night range, and best of all many are reservable in advance.
