Placing a travel trailer on our recreational property?

Hi everyone,

My husband and I own 5 acres of 'boat access only' recreational property in the Pacific Northwest. We spend weekends and holidays during the spring to fall. We have been tenting so far and I'm not loving the tent... We would like to build a cabin someday but we've looked into it and with permits, the requirement for septic etc. it's too pricey for us at the moment. I am thinking of barging over a travel trailer for us to stay in while there or perhaps even building a small cabin on a trailer (aka a tiny home.) The reason we're considering these options is that both could be fairly easily removed if needed. Another couple in our area brought over a travel trailer and seem happy with it so far.

What I'm really hoping for is some thoughts from people who have been in this situation about whether this is a good or bad idea. It is pretty damp around here and does drop below freezing a few times during the winter so I'm not sure how well the travel trailer will hold up, but it does seem appealing nonetheless.

Thank you!

  • You have to dump your septic waste somewhere, even if you have a trailer.
  • What are the local zoning/restrictions on placing a trailer on site for 'recreational use'.....?

Recreational use because MANY places do not allow LIVING in trailer on personal property ---unless building a home

    If no zoning issues...why not!
  • Instal a septic system, get power and water to the property. Then its pretty easy to drop a trailer in place.
  • It's done all the time in Minnesota. In the fall we put rv antifreeze in the lines and use the camper without water. if its really damp look at Ice castle or one of the ice fish house types. these use treat wood in the floors and are well insulated.
    Good luck
  • It's all about the septic system.
At least that's what it's like here. You can use your trailer as a temporary shelter while you build your cabin, not more than two years.
