What Brian said is what my 'spotter' does for me...
And just to add, your chalk line idea is a good one, but YOU need to be the one that can see it and adjust accordingly.
Your 'inside turn' is going to be on the passenger side, so that will make it a bit more challenging to see it in your mirror, but it's possible... I have to do that on my first 'cut' to get my trailer up the curb and started on it's track.
My final cut is to the drivers side, so that makes it easier for me gauge when I need to cut it hard..
My trick to backing is to watch the trailer tires as you are backing up.. That's ultimately where the trailer is going to end up, so it does no good to watch the back end of the trailer or have someone else directing you.. Yes, you still need a spotter, but they just need to tell you to STOP and watch out on your blind side.
It just plain takes practice, practice, practice, so the earlier idea of setting up some cones or whatever in a parking lot that resembles your parking situation is a great one too!
