Poll

Did you buy a new or used rig? Or, do you have experience with both? Preference?

  • Bought a new TT directly from the manufacturer. It has a 2 year warranty and since neither of us is handy from an automotive POV this made sense for us. No problems with excessive depreciation for the RV we bought since it keeps it's value.

First a pop up, then a 19 foot trailer , then a 25 footer, and now a 38 footer that will go into permanent site and not be towed.
Cash for every one of them just like my vehicles.

We both like fresh, clean never before used and fully ours.

I remember many years ago when we had to look around for some change to buy a loaf of bread!
then along the line the Man upstairs smiled on us.

  • We ended up buying new but looked long and hard for used first. We couldn't find the floor plan we wanted in a used and the sellers had no idea of what their trailers weighed. We didn't feel like driving all over the place just to find the weight of trailers.
  • Have bought at TC, a TT and a DP all used from private individuals. I'd rather pay a reasonable price letting someone else pay the new price and waste their money, not mine. All three were very good RVs. When I buy again, it will also be used.

  • Always bought new and ordered with custom upgrades and changes to fit our needs.
  • I have never bought a new RV, and at this point in my life, never will.
I bought a new car in 1969, 1981, and 2006. I will never do that again, either.
Depreciation is one reason, the other is that next year I will have to renew the registration on two of my vehicles. At that time, they will be eligible for PERMANENT registration. I will never have to renew the registration as long as I own them. Since I intend to drive them until the wheels fall off, or I die, whichever comes first, the extra cost will be worth it!
A vehicle must be 11 years old or older to qualify. So, no new vehicles!
  • ours was new, the primary reason is it was a new floor plan that we wanted and it had just come out in trailers so no used ones existed.
  • All three of our TT were bought new, 1988 Prowler 23', 1992 Holiday Rambler 28' and 2014 Heartland Wilderness 31'. All three have been sold, the Wilderness sold just last week, and we are looking for another RV.

We are open to either a new, wife likes all the new goodies, or a one to two year old unit. I like buying new for the warranty but if I can save enough used is a good way to go in my opinion. So far we haven't found any used units that weren't traded in to a dealer because of miss use and just weren't worth bothering with buying.
