I put the stated amount of water in the tank when finished along with that blue liquid that comes with a measuring device on the lid. Does the blue stuff have benefit? Beats me, but no smells emanate and flow is unimpeded. Also, make sure you leave some water in the bowl to keep the gasket from drying out.
