We have day/ night shades, and if you have quality ones, they work well and do not have strings breaking all the time. We did however, add curtains in the bedroom on a tension rod over the day/night shades. I can easily take them down if they are not wanted or slide them over, open the day, night shades and the window. We did this because of the amount of light that comes thru in the morning. The curtains also add another layer of insulation when it's cold.
