Ram 1500 5.7 bighorn

It has a factory tow package trying to figure out best weight trailer for it. Family and dogs combine for 800 lbs.
Looking at a gulf stream 255bh. Dry weight is 4800. Sales person said easily but now not sure after reading more
  • Are you sure that is your door tag payload? Seems high for a Big Horn.

I tow 5000 pounds with a 5.7 express. 90% of interstate driving I run about 62 mph 5th gear(6sp) 2200 RPM. I have had it kicked down into 2nd gear and running 4000rpm. The thing pulls!! I don't think that I would go to much heavier.

I crossed Virginia SE to NW on local three number roads at speed limit for the most part and was totally comfortable.
  • You will be limited mainly by the cargo capacity of your truck. 800 lb. family and dogs leaves about 700 for tongue weight. The trailer you're looking at may exceed that once it's loaded for a trip.
  • Towing depends a lot on the country you travel. On the Coastal Plain or on an Interstate you will have no problems. In the Rocky Mountains, on secondary roads it will seem heavier and slower.
  • I pull a 5000 pound (empty) 25 foot trailer with the same truck, and I hardly every know it is behind me.
I go up the steep mountains in western NC with ease and it doesn't even labor.

You will have no problems. Just make sure you have weight distribution bars and a sway bar

  • That max trailer seems low. Where did you get the Mat Trailer number. Should be more like 8000ish. But, you should be fine. Funny to see the different numbers than my Big Horn CC Diesel.
  • Crew cab
    Axle is 3.55
    GVWR 6800
    Payload 1540
    GAWR
    3700 front
    3900 rear
    GCWR 14000
    8000 MAX TRAILER.

    It's a 2012 bighorn outdoor man
  • What year is the truck?
You need to find out gear ratio. (3.21, 3.55, 3.73)
That will tell you how much you can tow.
