There is a sanitizer used by the dairy and winery industry to sterilize their equipment with no noticeable taste or odor. The lack of a irritating odor is extremely important to the food processing industry and this is what they use. It is called Star San and is extremely inexpensive to use. It may not be as cheap as bleach but there is no lingering chlorine smell either. I used it for years in my fresh water tank without a problem even though my wife refused to drink water from the tap. I think you can get Star San on Amazon.
