I also think you made good decisions. Seeing the plumbing and appliances working might make the second RV a reasonable deal. The generator taking a few tries to start could just be that it hadn't been running for awhile and it took a bit to get the air bubbles out of the line from the gas tank. Some generator models can be primed by holding the switch in the stop position for several seconds before starting.
Unless you have storage limitations, I'd suggest at least looking at larger RVs. They are a little harder to maneuver and park, more exhausting to wash, and somewhat more limited in what camp sites you can use. However, when driving down the road there's little difference, and the gas milage is similar regardless (i.e. not very good). What you get usually is a much more convenient bed and more space in the other interior arrangements, bigger holding tanks, more storage room, etc., all of which can make for more convenient and enjoyable use. I think the tradeoffs are worth it, but some others disagree.
If you're only camping for relatively short times, you may not find any need for a car to tow behind. I know I have not thus far wished I had a toad setup, and there have been times when it would be less convenient. (With nothing in tow, my 32' long class C can fairly easily fit in two end-to-end parking spaces in a parking lot. A 24' plus most towed vehicles would not very easily do so, and anything much longer towing something certainly would not.)
