I think it's good to see a lot of RVs of all types before deciding. RV shows, dealer lots, asking around. We considered everything from a large class A to a small trailer for a couple of years before coming full circle to our original thought, a class B.
Never regretted it, found a good used one and have traveled all over the US and Canada for 2+ months at a time. Love every minute of it, and about 95% of the small RV owners I've met we're very happy with their choice. So take with a grain of salt people who want to tell you not to buy a 22’ RV - just see a lot of them and imagine in detail how you'd use yours.
I also think you are smart to learn as much as possible about all the systems and how they work. Owners of both new and used RVs often have issues to deal with, but actually using one is a big education. It really would help you to rent one for a week and start some on-the-job-training.
