Running the fridge while driving.

Thanks everyone, I appreciate the comments. I probably should have searched for this before I posted, but I was in a hurry, was trying to get done with work early so we could hit the road. This fridge is made to run on either LP, 120V, or 12V, it has the switches for all. From reading the replies I'm guessing the problem might be that the power hookup at the hitch is only the flat 4 wire. I was hoping maybe with the headlight/parking lights on perhaps it would get power. I'm guessing I would need a different power supply to get power to the fridge all the time?

I did start the fridge on LP about 30 minutes before we left the house, when we arrived at the campsite the flame had gone out, but we hadn't run out of LP. I'm hoping that maybe there was just some air in the lines, I should have checked it enroute. There are vents at the bottom and top where the fridge is, maybe the wind while driving can blow it out?

Me too and since it's so far behind me and on the opposite side of my fuel door I don't even bother when refueling .... I also use diesel which makes the refueling concern even less.

If I can't safely use the fridge etc. on propane while traveling then I dang sure am not going to be sleeping in that death trap.......

Now that I've gotten that sarcasm out of the way, it's not in your manual because it's OK to run it on propane while traveling.

MFG. does make a mention about fridge operation while in transit that fridge doesn't need to be level cause the motion of rig causes the ammonia cooling solution to not accumulate in the piping. Fridge will function OK while traveling.

Caveat: Some folks turn fridge OFF prior to entering a station before refueling

If you run the fridge on propane while driving all your Grandkids will be born stark naked-and that's the truth.

2oldman does good work on keeping the links to past threads. many do use the propane while driving but I have seen with my own eyes what happens at gas stations when you do. since them I use reusable ice packs in the fridge and refreeze them at night while sleeping. I like my TT and my truck and my family just the way they are and can't see them going up in smoke. now that might seem a little over the top but here on this forum, there have been people who have said "I'm insured who cares". I think that is a little irresponsible. if you check with the RV Doctor and the guy who does RV education 101 they say DO NOT TRAVEL WITH THE FRIG RUNNING. that is my 2 cents on this matter.

most popups have 3-way fridges, 12vDC, 110vAc and propane.
your tow vehicle's 7-pin outlet needs to be checked to see if power from the tow vehicle is running to the trailer to run the 12v side.
there may be a fuse that's not activated.

remember, the fridge gets colder faster on propane. the 110v side is slower and the 12v side is even slower.

You might not have a "3 way" fridge. With my last 2 trailers, the fridges only work on shore power or propane.

We run ours at all times on propane while driving BTW.

Our pop-up had a 3-way fridge and it would freeze everything if we drove for 8 hours with it running on 12V power from the truck.
