RV Loan Tax Questions

We're getting ready to purchase our first FW trailer. We're already pre approved for the loan, but I have a couple questions before we go to the dealer. Based on my research in our home state, we will have to pay sales tax IOT register the trailer. If I pay sales tax in the state of purchase, then I have to pay the difference if my home state taxes are more. So my questions.

Will I have to pay sales tax where I purchase the FW at the time of purchase, or do they expect the tax to be paid at the time of registration?

If I don't have to pay tax at the time of purchase, is it possible to have my home state taxes included in the loan? How do I ensure this happens? Will the dealership give me a check or will the loan company do this?

Basically, I don't have the 3+ grand on hand to write a check to the registration office, and I'm hoping to have it included in the loan. Or am I just p***ing up a rope? Thanks in advance.
  • Generally you pay sales tax in the state where you reside, in Georgia it is called "use tax". Never heard of out of state sales tax being included in a loan, but ask anyway. The loan folks would have to pay the sales tax on your behalf in your home state and I really don't see that happening, but..ask anyway.
  • Since it is out of state, I would be surprised if you can put your home state's taxes in the loan, but I don't really KNOW. Of course, you can just put down that much less on the RV, then have the cash to pay the taxes. Six of one, half dozen of the other.

Every state is different in whether to collect taxes or not. I live in TN, but bought my MH in MS. The dealer didn't collect any taxes at all, and I paid them on registration. (He also did not supply me with a driveout tag, but I got lucky and got it home without being stopped. I went that afternoon and got a TN temporary tag.)
  • We are purchasing a fw toy in MI and we pay in our home state.

You can include it in the loan or pay out of pocket.

    Just talk to your lender.

Do you have a dealer handling your purchase already?
