RV Storage - best options?

My HOA wont allow RV storage, so I got to find a storage location.

Do I just go for my local self storage type places or should I look for more dedicated RV storage?

Thanks.

  • Its a long long way from Northern Virginia, so may be impractible for you.
However this may suit RV'ers who live in Missouri and surrounding states.
    Innerspace Storage

No need to winterize, no dust and perfect all year round temperature.
    and they are nice people.
I used them for several years.
  • I went from an outside storage facility where RV's were broken into to a secure covered storage facility. It is more costly, but they wash my MH upon return, dump the tanks if asked to, air my tires if asked, and fill my propane tanks if I want them to. They park all RV's and boats or cars in the facility for you. I have never had a problem in this facility. The only drawback is the cost, for me it is $169 a month. I do like the fact that is is stored indoors out of the elements and it is clean when I want to use it. JMO
  • I've used a "regular" storage facility that had open areas where they rented a space to park, that's where my RV was broken into. About 400 customers had rentals, who knows how many more had the code to the gate?

I've moved to a RV and boat storage space that has mostly RV-size sheds and a few parking spaces in the open. Each customer has a key to the gate. All are RV or boat owners. In nine years, no break-ins.

What it will cost depends on where it is, value of land, zoning, insurance costs for owner. In my small town, I can park in a shed for about $35 a month. For a similar facility within 15 miles of a city of 500,000 the cost is $120 to $150 a month. I know an indoor storage warehouse in Chicago that charges $400 a month for a RV-size ground-floor drive-in/drive-out. In my town I can rent an 800 sq ft home for that.

All part of "cost of ownership" as discussed from your other posts. Storage and insurance costs are very much location dependent. If you really live in the wrong place, easily into five figures annually. There are places where insurance and garaging run $10,000 a year for a car, and most people don't own cars, it is less expensive to rent or hire livery.
  • Look around, I found an old Lumber Yard distribution center converted to storage. Keypad Entry Gate, inside storage, easy in and out for $50 per month about 6 miles from home.

We were lucky, hope you are too!
  • Just curious about it, I googled "northern virginia rv storage" and got lots and lots of hits. The one I was really interested in was the Bull Run RV Storage, which for an oversized space is $222 per quarter, so $888 per year for jurisdiction costs (Arlington, Fairfax and Loudoun and the cities of Alexandria, Fairfax and Falls Church) or $238 for out of those areas.

Holly Acres in Woodbridge has storage for $71/month or $852 per year.

Gateway Storage has several different lots there in NOVA, but they don't list their rates.
  • Check out nearby rural airports. Lots of them have hangars with extra space, and pilots who will store your rig for a few bucks.
  • Because we are in a large city the only viable option for us is the local self storage type places.

We stored in 3 different facilities
First One our trailer was broken into luckily not much damage or goods stolen
Second One our trailer was backed into twice. Again not much damage.
Third no problems except rent has gone from $100 per month to $327 in 10 years with no improvements to justify the increase.

    Whatever you can find.
If there is a dedicated rv storage, they could have electric, water and sewer and covered parking. For the price, it may be worth it to you.
    Consider distance to and from.

  • I live in Florida where the sun really is hard on things like RVs. I stored for a while at a place that had carport type storage to keep it outta the sun. My HOA is the same but my DW found a place that was more like a garage with a drive in door and drive out door and we can store other things in it. I love it except every month when I have to make the payment. Get what you can afford but if I were you I'd try to keep it outta the elements and in a secured compound. Good luck.
  • If you are anywhere near a rural area look for local farmers with space in their tractor sheds. We store truck and trailer during the summer in a tractor shed 11 miles from home. Out of sight, locked up and I have access any time.
