Lots of people do this. Use good judgment. Trust your "spidy sense", that is if something doesn't feel right, that's because it probably isn't. Checking places out is always a good thing, even when you're not alone.
Check out Loree Johnson's Blog. She's a full timer who travels alone and makes her living as a nature photographer. I know her from online photography forums.
