OP - compromise. Instead of bleach use swimming pool chlorine granules. No problem leaving that overnight since it's left for longer in swimming pools of all types. :)
Chlorine granules need to circulate to dissolve. When shocking the pool, if the granules make it to a low flow area of the pool, they will sit they for many, many hours before dissolving. Circulate them through the pump and the impeller will be shot. Also, chlorine granules increase water hardness, so you are just depositing more calcium build up.
If you are dead set on using pool chemicals, get liquid shock. It doesn't raise the hardness as much and it does not need to dissolve. It has a higher concentration of Chlorine than Household bleach, so don't use as much. Household bleach is best.
I have a 36 gallon fresh water tank and put 1/2 cup in it first, then fill with water until it is full. Then I fill the water lines until I smell bleach and then let it sit, usually overnight. Then rinse until no more bleach smell.
