Short Term Storage

I was in South Carolina for the first two weeks of November. When we left to come back to New York State we left our travel trailer in storage at the campground as we are going back the end of Jan, Now during winter storage or non use times here in NY I have never had a problem with mice or other pests.
When I left the trailer there I drain all tanks, disconnected the battery and even put a little antifreeze in the drains.
Now should have I put out some kind of rodent bait or bug killer while it sits in storage down there ? The storage area is huge and busy, very little grass if any.
  • Ocean Lakes in Myrtle Beach. They have a large storage area and that is where it is. I will be there come February.
  • OP, where in SC were you and where did you store your camper? I'm researching options near Charleston for our February trip.
  • I had mice in my MH stored here at home. They even made a nest out of fiberglass they took from the oven insulation.

I crawled around under the MH and closed all the holes in the floor that I could find. I also made a little cover to block the power cord entrance since the MH is plugged in while in storage.

Since I did that, several years ago I have not had any mice. I keep a loaded trap in it with fresh bait, but haven't caught anything and haven't seen any sign of mice.
  • Thanks to all for reply's. I am one of those O C D type of guys and have spent a great deal of time under Trailer sealing off any access point I can fine. Even with that said here in NY when I put it into storage I do put out bait. I use the pvc pipe method of making a T and setting one by each side between the duels. This is something I can keep an eye here at home.
I guess I out thought myself down there thinking by baiting I might be just drawing them into me.
I do remove all food and water and give it a good cleaning when leaving it. Like some said nothing I can do but hope. I have not heard of fresh cab but I will look it up thank you.
  • To me the answer seems obvious ... with so many rodent control products available these days at a reasonable cost why not just pick one and use it anyway, regardless of where you park and for how long. One winter I did have a mouse (or mice) get into the ducting of our KZ Spree during winter storage and the smell when I tested the furnace in the spring was unbelievably awful. :E The only way I could completely solve the problem was to replace the ducting entirely ... since then I always keep a couple of packets of Fresh Cab Rodent Repellent in the trailer, year 'round. Why not? ... the cost of doing so is insignificant compared to the potential cost of damage mice can cause in a trailer and although I wouldn't say it's a 100% guarantee at least I've made an effort. What I can say though is that since I started using Fresh Cab I've not had any further mouse (mice) issues. :B
  • A large open gravel area is not the ideal habitat for rodents. Unless there is a consistent food source nearby, like a restaurant dumpster, you will probably be OK. Rats look for food and water, and will make their own home by digging. Mice look for a warm place to nest, and also for food and water.
  • A little late now, but it would have been best to ask others at the busy storage, if they have encountered any rodent problems while storing there. If unknown, it is wise to take some steps to deter, but still may not guarantee total success.

  • mice can be any where , best thing is no food in the rv when being stored and set some fresh cab rodent bags in the rv.
