We went last winter toadless, renting when we needed supplies or to sightsee. I believe we missed a lot and spent about $3k renting cars. That would pay for a tow bar setup on a toad. Trouble is, neither of our cars can be towed flat, so I need to buy something before the next big adventure.
Also, we found we were picking campgrounds based on their proximity to Enterprise locations. If you're going to be on the road full time or for an entire season, IMHO, a toad is required.
Depending on where you are going and how you travel might find renting from rental outfits like ZipCar less expensive. They include high mileage (200-300 miles daily)and free gas. The only disadvantage is they are generally only found near universities and large metro areas.
We don't currently own a car (It's an expensive liability in Manhattan for my sight) and won't until the TT is about to arrive. Interim, we rent from Zipcar. Useful for day trips and getting gear to the campground. Once there we ride our bicycles or walk locally, have take out delivered (clam pizza or a shore dinner every Friday; I envy you your region's food!) and have produce and ice delivered via PeaPod. This behavior will change when we leave the region but I'm enjoying it as long as it lasts, LOL.
