stopping for a single night - rest area or rv park?

Just getting into this and have a toy hauler with no slides - what's the general consensus on midway stops between point A & B. Is it worth the hassle to set up everything for a single night in an RV...

Most of our RVing is to travel and see the country. We usually stop at campgrounds and use that as a base to see the surrounding area. We have used Wallmart and while it was quiet and pleasant and free, I like a campground better.
