Oil on the gasket is the most important thing. No oil and the gasket will weld itself on.
Just went through this on an 8.1 liter, used Winne Adventurer we bought in June. Ripped the bottom plate out of a cup type remover. Destroyed a band clamp filter wrench. Couldn't fit a chain wrench between the filter and block. Punched a whole in the bottom and one in the side and let the oil drain out. Then took snips and cut the entire canister off. Hit the metal top plate of the filter with an air chisel and it still wouldn't budge. Finally took a propane torch and heated the out edge of the filter until the gasket started melting and smoking. Then the air chisel got it loose.
