Tire inflation question

I've got a new Four Winds 22E on the Ford chassis. It has the Michelin LT225/75r 16 tires. The door plate says to inflate 65 rear and 75 front. According to the Michelin RV tire guide, this inflation is for max load on this chassis. I won't have it loaded near that much. I think it weighs about 9500 as it sits not fully loaded with my stuff. It's only me and maybe 1 other person. Michelin chart says I shoulld be running 50-55# front and rear. Should I follow the Michelin guide for these tires? 75 in the front requires constant steering correction. 55# would allow me to carry 2k# which is probably more than I ever would.
Hopefully this won't start a fight like my question about running the fridge.:)

You could ask what color the sky is on a clear day, and start a fight! :B

In answer to your REAL question, unless and until you get your rig weighed, so you know its actual weight, use the figures on the door frame or the ones provided by Four Winds. Four Winds may have put other information on a data sheet attached to the RV. Look in pantries and closets for one.

The correct answer is get it loaded with all your stuff, then go to a scale and find out what the actual weight is. Then you can set your pressure based on the load tables. If it doesn't handle well with the full inflation your alignment may be off.

This is the correct way to figure out the tire pressure YOU need. If possible get all four corners weighed to tell you what each set of tires is actually carrying, if that is not possible or easy to get, weigh each axle. Use the tire pressure chart and follow that. Your tires will like you and the rig should drive easily and straight.
  • This is from Michelin for your tire size:

    PSI 40 45 50 55 60 65 70 75 80
    Load 3300 3580 3880 4120 4380 4670 4880 5120 5360

    Max on one tire
    2680 LBS at 80 PSI

These numbers are for TWO tires. You need 72.5 psi to support 10K lbs.

50 lbs of air is just asking for a blow out. Pump them up to 75 all around.

Why do you say this? Why would Michelin publish bad info in their RV tire guide?

  • For proper weight values check the Four Wind's chart posted somewhere in the MH, probably in a closet or cabinet.
  • I'd go by the door plate until you actually get it weighed.
