What you've "heard" aside: In the three years you've had the Towmax's on, how many failures/flats/difficulties have you had with them?
That said: frankly, I think you'll get better advice if you consult whatever tire folks you trust to put rubber on the rest of your vehicles. You'll get nothing but folks' preconceived notions here!
Including your pre conceived notions. He hasn't had any flats because he hasn't even bought the camper yet!
So those tires are probably 5 years old now, presumably sat outside, at least for as long as the op stated. They're done, other than to tow it home and to the tire shop.
Kumho trailer tires are the best I've used, but for 16s I'd get the heaviest rated truck tire you can find. Nitto and Toyo have some of the best weight ratings and I've trusted Toyos loaded to their capacity for 10,000s of miles with good results.
Add Goodyear Marathons to the list of do not buy tires. They suck unless you are using them to trim your fenders with slinging rubber!
