Tell us what you envision. Going to the major national parks? Visiting big cities? Enjoying the outdoors, hiking?
If it's mostly the parks and outdoors, a trailer could work IF you are mechanically inclined. Things frequently need adjusting or fixing on both old and newer RVs. Definitely do some shorter trips well in advance. Two months is a big bite to chew.
Book your national park camping sites now for summer 2018 or as soon as reservations open.
Or do a hybrid experience without an RV. Look into renting campground cabins for some of the trip, to add the outdoors element of campfires, outdoor cooking, animal sightings, other kids to talk to, nearby activities, etc. Many KOA campgrounds have these, and seem to be adding more - I think they come with sheets and towels but could be wrong on that point. I've also seen some state parks and even National parks with cabins or tent bases. A lot of Canadian national parks have yurt rentals.
Alternating some unusual accommodations like that in or near parks (with standard motels with pools which most kids like) would make the trip memorable.
