With no experience towing or setting up a camper, this would not be the time to learn. You do have other options though.
Many State Parks have cabins you can rent that would give you a "camping" experience without the monetary outlay to buy a camper and the fuel needed to tow it across the country. "Rough it" in a cabin for a few days and then stay at hotels for a few days. Then stay in another cabin in a different state.
