We love camping but we also aren't going to blow smoke up your....
Watch the movie "RV" and stop with about 15 minutes left (before the happy ending) to give you an idea of what to expect. While there is a bit of exaggeration, you would be amazed how many of the issues shown actually happen to people.
If it's a one time thing without any prior experience and without time to do a couple shakedown trips, it will turn into a cluster. Mr. Murphy will make sure of it.
Now if you have time to get the rig ahead of time, take a few trips and you plan to keep it and us it afterwards...that's a different ballgame and an RV can be a great option.
You still didn't tell us what this 2 month trip will look like. If it's a mad dash from place to place then sell the RV at the end, hotel will likely be cheaper and easier.
Another thing to consider is Airbnb or similar. Staying in a hotel and eating out for a few days is a vacation. Do it for weeks and it gets old real quick. With an Airbnb, you can get separate bedrooms, a living room and kitchen. It does take a critical eye when looking at the advertisements. We use them frequently and while we've never had false photos, some get really creative. If you are going to be at a destination for a week or more, they can be very cost effective.
Related to the Airbnb, is this an opportunity to do Europe? Prices are good right now. If you are looking at buying an RV and feeding it GAS for a a few thousand miles of travel, $4-5k for air tickets shouldn't be a big concern. If you are smart, it won't cost any more than the RV plan. The kids are plenty old enough to have it be a meaningful memory and learning experience for the rest of their lives.
- 1 week in London (a bit expensive but all the great world class museums are free and travel by tube is cheap).
- Chunnel to Paris and 2 weeks.
- Rent a small RV for a week to loop Bavaria and see a bit of the alps.
- Train or low cost air to Rome for a month (you won't see half of Rome in that time)
Sorry if this comes across negative towards the RV option but RV's are expensive and really only make sense as part of a longer term plan.
