Another thing to consider is Airbnb or similar. Staying in a hotel and eating out for a few days is a vacation. Do it for weeks and it gets old real quick. With an Airbnb, you can get separate bedrooms, a living room and kitchen. It does take a critical eye when looking at the advertisements. We use them frequently and while we've never had false photos, some get really creative. If you are going to be at a destination for a week or more, they can be very cost effective.
I'm a big fan of HomeAway for the above reasons. I've also rented condos/suites with full kitchens in numerous hotels.
While I agree with the mentality that one has to start somewhere if you do choose to RV I would rent for a weekend or two first.
I will stand by my earlier comments, though, that no one here can tell you what your "most memorable" way to travel will be.
