At various times as a child and an adult, I've had fabulous road trips involving sleeping in tents, motels, and RVs. They're all somewhat different, of course, and each has advantages and disadvantages........

A pop up would be an easier way to go. They are more like pulling a utility trailer as far as actually towing it and would most likely you would not have a need to buy a special vehicle to tow it with.
Look around for a good deal on a used one and that way you will be able to sell it after your trip if you so desire.
