If it's a one time thing without any prior experience and without time to do a couple shakedown trips, it will turn into a cluster. Mr. Murphy will make sure of it.
While there's always some chance for any of us that something won't go exactly as planned your assessment IMO is a gross exaggeration. Keep it simple with a 10' or 12' popup with no slide and with a little common sense, a sense of humour, and acknowledgement beforehand that Mr Murphy is always out there lurking the OP could easily accomplish a 2 month summer trip with his family. I've done it many times, started doing it when I too was a total newbie, and just don't see all the Chicken Little "the sky is falling" scenarios. :R
Could things go swimmingly?...sure....
But if you drive home with the RV on Wednesday and head out on Friday afternoon with zero experience, assuming all will go well, I'll give you 10-1 odds, there will be major issues, some form of break down and probably some crying involved.
A tent camper reduces the odds of breakdown a bit but increases the odds of crying as you are crammed into a smaller area with less luxury.
Years later you may have fond memories of the trip from hell but in real time...
To the OP: If you can get the RV ahead of time and take a few short trips to get a feel for things, it's got great potential. Still may have some issues but you will be far better prepared. If you just get it and go, I'm really not exaggerating much.
