I can't believe the number of naysayers on this topic on an RV forum. If I never did the things that people told me I couldn't do, I would have never done anything.
Buy a used trailer that can be towed by a vehicle you own. Bring a tent for the kids. Set out on your trip. See the country instead of the inside of a hotel room. Breathe fresh air instead of worrying about germs on the TV remote. Everyone here started exactly where you are now. Unless they were born in an RV that is.
This is your answer!
All of us were in your shoes at one time. We were all first-timers and many of us have been tenting or RVing for many, many years. Why? Because it's fun. It grows on you. You meet awesome people and have the opportunity to visit fantastic places and actually live in our national parks. Your children are the perfect age to do this. You'll be rich in experiences as opposed to staying in a motel.
There are plenty of excellent used ones out there. If you decide to sell it after one trip you won't be out a lot of money.... but I'll just bet you keep it for making many more good family memories.
