TV reception

This is my first post and my first Camper purchase. We just bought a Coachmen Catalina 253RKS that we will be taking on our first outing this coming weekend. One of the features I love about the camper is the ability to hook up a TV outside. This Saturday night there is a Nascar race and I want to watch it outside while by the fire. My camper antenna doesn't pick up very well while in my yard which is normal for my area. My question is can I buy a dish and use a box from my spare bedroom to connect it to my camper. I have found the dish along with all of the cables and such for $59. The package includes a stand, cables, compass, directions everything but the receive box. I really want to insure I can watch the race while camping. Let me know your experiences when there is no cable hookup at the campsite.
  • As long as the dish assembly matches your service provider, yes, it should work. Make sure you get the post on the stand perfectly level for the best results when aiming. The DishPointer.com website can be helpful for getting the settings for your location. If you have a smartphone, there are apps that will help find a location with a clear view of the satellites.

Once you're set up, please keep the volume down so you don't disturb the neighbors... :)
  • Sure you can, as long as you can find the satellite and set up your receiver. Not really that hard, especially after you've done it a few times. You can get antennas (the dish) that are manual, semi automatic, and automatic. Your spare receiver is active, right? I would try it a few times at home so you're less likely to be disappointed while camping. I use the Satellite AR free app to find where to point the dish. Good luck!

Be sure you bring along all your account numbers etc. My SAT RCVR sometimes needed reset and you have to call your SAT provider or maybe you can login to them online and not have to talk to anyone. I have DIRECTV and can do that... You will need your account info when doing this...

My portable SAT DISH has two ports on it so I bring along two RG cables and two SAT RCVRS so I can setup TV for both the living room and the bedroom.

I also found it easier to use the VID output from the SAT RCVR and switch my trailer TV to VID 1 to watch SAT TV using the remote.

  • I just did this and it was far easier than I expected. I borrowed a receiver from a room that doesn't get used much anymore. Bought the rest of the needed stuff like dish & tripod, signal finder, cable and compass. The hardest part was figuring out how to reset the receiver which is easy once you know how and I didn't need to phone the service provider. Dishpointer.com works great for elevation and azimuth. I'm only interested in HD from one satellite and don't need to worry about skew. I have the receiver permanently mounted inside and ran new RG6 & HDMI cables inside.

I would set it all up at your trailer while still at home and make sure you've got it figured out. Once the receiver is reset, it's just a case of pointing the dish in the right direction and fine tuning it. Am out camping for a couple of days and am using it at a CG for the first time - way cool. Can't get the satellite I want for HD due to trees in the way but got the other one for SD okay.

One thing I've found is that I don't get the same amount of SD or HD channels on the separate camping setup while testing at home that we do in our house despite aiming to the same satellites.

I did call our service provider to figure out how to get the sat. remote to operate the volume control on our Sansui TV and could not figure out how to do it. DW says she knows how and will do it when I'm back home.
  • Yes. We do it all the time. I've got it down to a one beer job. Is your trailer wired for sat.? Sat signal will not go thru splitters on the cable connection before it enters sat. tuner. After tuner, splitters usually pose no problem.
  • many do just that.. Dish Network and Directv has differences...

I have a tablet (like a smartphone) and use a satellite finder app... helps greatly in aligning the dish (antenna).. and seeing WHAT may be blocking the satellite.
if you get the alignment GOOD you get HD.. not so good SD... but it is like finding a DOT in the sky.. and no light to see the dot..
    Practice . practice...

also if you are 100 miles or more from home.. you will need to CALL the provider to change your "SERVICE" area.. for LOCAL channels..
on Directv.. could take 5 minutes and sometimes 20 minutes..

FYI. in some areas the local channels are mixed within the HD program and so you need to get the HD working correctly.. (MB,SC is one)

and YES .. I take an old bill (Directv) and tape it to the receiver.. everything you need to talk or type to the provider is on it..

I also like to view Nascar. Tega was Nuts.

Come join us camping at the track !!!
  • I have the Hopper from Dish which allows me to watch anything on my home SAT/DVR system from my iPad / Laptop, requires a decent internet connection but that's the best I can do since my wife said 'We don't go camping to watch TV':( I beg to differ but I'll save that battle for another time ;)
  • Thanks for all of the help. We had a great time on our camping trip. All of my kids and grand kids came by or stayed with us over night. We had plenty of room between our new camper and my oldest daughters camper. I didn't get to watch the race due to it was on Fox sports south but I did listen to it on the radio. I plan on getting some type of dish to help with reception so I can pick up special shows or races that we like to watch and to also have some cartoons available for the grandkids when they start to wind down for the day.
the camper pulled great and I had no problems backing it or setting it up. I love the large shower and the overall layout. My wife and I plan on using it a lot through out the year and hopefully by next year we will take a long trip to travel through several states for a couple of weeks.
