Universal AC to DC Car Cigarette Lighter Socket Adapter

Hello and thanks in advance!

Could I plug this device to the trailer 12v outlet and attach my cigarette lighter inverter to it while not plugged in to shore power? I know the device states AC to DC but I just want to cross this out as a possible solution if need be. If not, can someone recommend another device that will accomplish this? I just want to plug the inverter in right next to the tv. Thank you and sorry if you have to copy and paste!

  • I'm thinking that you're getting your power sources confused as your question doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

"Could I plug this device to the trailer 12v outlet [COLOR=](No. The device in your link plugs into a 110 volt AC outlet, not a 12v DC outlet) and attach my cigarette lighter inverter to it [COLOR=](your cigarette lighter inverter plugs into a 12v DC power supply and provides a 110v AC output. If you plugged it into this device, you would be taking AC to DC via the adapter, and then taking DC back to AC with your inverter. No value or purpose in doing this.) while not plugged in to shore power? I know the device states AC to DC but I just want to cross this out as a possible solution if need be. I believe from my reading of your post, that you are wanting to run your AC television off of DC power, right? If you have a DC outlet pre-wired to a location inside your coach, I suppose that you could just plug a portable DC-to-AC inverter directly into this outlet and then run your television from the AC inverter. This assumes, of course, that this portable inverter is designed to provide the amperage needed to run the television. If all you have are AC outlets in the coach, you'll need to wire an inverter directly into the batteries.

I hope this adds more clarity than confusion...

This still doesn't make any sense. The device you posted makes 12V out of 110V at very low current. An inverter makes 110VAC out of 12VDC in this case to run various electronica and appliances. Either way, that device means nothing, and Yes, you should wire directly to the battery whenever you can. Those little plug-in inverters (DC to AC) can get cig plugs vary hot

Triple click, right click, Go to... Or, highlight, rc, gt...

With Chrome having links be clickies is not that important.
  • If you have a lighter socket near the TV, if it's a newer TV that doesn't need too much power you could just power it with a small inverter that has a lighter plug on it. There is more impedance and hence voltage drop between the battery and the inverter that way than if connected more directly to the battery, but for a small load the total drop is small and it often isn't a real problem.

This, in fact, is exactly the setup I have. The only annoyance is the slightly noisy cooling fan in my inverter, and the fun of plugging and unplugging things to swap between shore power and inverter power. Having a quiet inverter would eliminate both problems as there's no real need to not use it when on shore power (the converter for the RV supplying more than enough to run the inverter and charge the batteries and operate the other 12V systems).

That is a converter, it makes 12 volt DC out of 120 volt AC, it is so you can use 12 volt devices you your house,

For example I might bring my Garmin into the house, use that to power it, then program in a router and/or destination.... Then take it back out to the car.

IT will not perform as you desire.

  • :@ This plugs into the 110 outlet? Not an expert or an electrician. However, from experience, the 12 volt outlets usually are fused and wired for low amps. Many devices will not work on the cigarette lighter. You need to wire the 12 volt plug directly to the battery with heavier wire and heavier fuse. The pictured 110 to 12 volt adaptor likewise offers a low amp output. Depends on what you want to run. There are many 12v to 110 inverters available offering the ability to run heavier loads.

I am totally missing what you are trying to do. The device you show is an AC to DC converter. Very low current, basically designed for cellphones, etc. it won't come close to running inverters, TV, or anything other than a cellphone or small tablet
